Lisa Westhorpe, MOT, OTR/L
Founder, Nurture Occupational Therapy
Lisa is a masters-level qualified occupational therapist and mum of two who has a passion for supporting women during their transition to motherhood. Originally from the UK, she lived in California with her husband and two young daughters for the past eight years, and recently returned to the UK to be nearer to family. After the birth of her daughters, and her (not always positive!) experiences in the postnatal period, she realized that her occupational therapy skills were a perfect fit to support new mums. Her background in pediatrics and running groups within learning disability and geriatric services gave her a great starting point to develop a new mum-focused service.
From 2016 onwards, Lisa developed her skills in maternal health, becoming certified as a Postpartum Corrective Exercise Specialist, and taking continuing education courses in maternal mental health, ergonomics and occupational performance coaching.
She founded Nurture Occupational Therapy in 2019, two months after the birth of her second daughter, to provide connection, education and support for women during their transition to motherhood and beyond. In the beginning, Lisa offered 1:1 ‘Mom Mentoring’ consultations with new mums to make sure that they could return to the activities they love, and avoid the emotional and physical strains that came with caregiving.
After working with mums 1:1, Lisa noticed that mums were lacking the supportive networks that could help them in their motherhood transition. This issue was particularly highlighted by the Covid-19 pandemic. Her practice now focuses on connecting mums through her online Growing Together mom and baby groups, where moms can find support and evidence-based information, as well as the opportunity to connect with other new moms and gain confidence in their new parenting role.
Lisa is incredibly passionate about supporting more occupational therapists to work in maternal health and support new mums using their skills and knowledge, and offers a free online ‘Starting Out In Maternal Health’ video course through her online Nurture OT Hub. Her online course, OTs In Maternal Health: How To Run Mom & Baby Groups As An OT, has so far trained 35 occupational therapists how to run her mom and baby groups.
Lisa also offers business development support through her Business Summer School program, and copywriting services for OT entrepreneurs. She is passionate about mentoring occupational therapists who are interested in working in, or want to expand their offerings in, maternal health.
